Picking the Right Keywords to Promote Is Critical

 

A CRITICAL DECISION

  Going after the right keywords is critical. The success of an online marketing campaign hinges on what keyword phrases you are trying to rank for.

Pick keyword phrases that are too competitive and you are going to be spinning your wheels - or at least spending a lot of time, money and energy going after terms you may never get.

Going after keywords that no one is looking for may be easier to get ranked for but won't generate much traffic.

Spend some time on this process. Once you have selected the keyword phrases you want to go after, make sure these keywords become part of the content on your website.

HOW TO READ THE REPORT

 

This is the data that we provide for the keywords you supply

NUMBER OF SEARCHES PER MONTH

This column shows the approximate number of search queries each month. It shows what you MIGHT expect in terms of monthly search volume for this particular keyword phrase. Now obviously, depending on whether you are in the #1 position or the #8 position you might expect a certain percentage of this number to visit your website.

The larger the number the better. We can expect more traffic.

DIRECT COMPETITION

These are the number of web pages that are indexed in Google for the given exact phrase. This is the count returned by Google when a searcher enters a search phrase with quotes. We realize that nobody actually searches with "quotations" but the reason we include this statistic is because it represents websites that have this EXACT term on their site. In other words - THESE are your DIRECT competitors.

The smaller the number the better. It means we have LESS competition.

STRENGTH OF COMPETITION

SOC is calculated by determining how many sites have done a minimum amount of Search Engine Optimization for a given keyword phrase. In part, SOC looks at the following factors:

How many sites are linking to the target site with the keyword phrase as the anchor text?
How many sites use the Keyword phrase as part of the title of the page?
How many sites use the keyword phrase as part of the URL?

The smaller the number the better. It means we have LESS competition.

 

 

OK - SO WHAT SHOULD WE GO AFTER

 

That is not always easy to decide, but in a perfect world the SOC and the number of Exact Matches would be low, and the Global Searches would be high. In most cases, it becomes a balancing act of trying to go after achievable terms with enough traffic to warrant launching a backlinks campaign.

In the example above, let's say you sell PET CLOTHES. Obviously the term "pet clothes" is going to be part of your website. It has to be. Consequently, we would want to create a campaign based on this term because it is our PRIMARY business - BUT - we will not focus all of our efforts on this term because it may be too difficult to break into. We'll spread our marketing efforts out.

So take a look at some of the other terms that we might want to focus on. These terms have a reasonably high search volume and a reasonably low number of competitors and SOC (there may be others keywords as well - we just picked these as examples)

xxs dog clothes

small dog coat

large dog clothes

cheap dog clothes

small dog collar

small dog clothes

clothes for dogs

If you don't go after these terms, you are missing an opportunity to generate traffic.

We would now want to make sure that these keyword phrases were well represented on our website - perhaps even creating separate pages based on each keyword phrases - and then add appropriate content and optimization.
