We are often asked by
people who order campaigns "When will I see the
backlinks in Google?" The answer is: maybe never.
That's doesn't mean they aren't there or aren't
working - Google will not show you how many
backlinks you really have.

Google does NOT show all the
backlinks pointing to a website. Some say they will only
show backlinks from sites with a PR of 4 or greater.
Some claim that Google will not show the backlinks to
prevent people from manipulating the search results. I
suspect the latter is probably closer to the truth. In
other words: if they showed you exactly what backlinks
are used to get a site to the top - then their algorithm
would be compromised.
Google fiercely guards it's
algorithm. They are not going to tip their hand - to us
OR to the their own search engine competitors (Yahoo, et
al)

Check the stats for
ART.COM When we checked it recently here is what it
showed us:

Google shows 465 backlinks.
Yahoo shows more than 2 million. ?????
Clearly a site like art.com
has more than 465 backlinks. The probably get that many
in week. The discrepancy is so large
between Google and Yahoo that it is useless to even make
a comparison.
The bottom line is Google
will only show a faction of the backlinks that you have.
That DOESN'T mean they aren't there or they aren't
working. If the page on which the backlink is situated
is publically accessible, and if the backlink is DO
FOLLOW - then we can assume that Google has access to
it. If Yahoo can see the links (and even Yahoo doesn't
report all the backlinks) - Google definitely can as
well.

Try not to fret too much on
whether or not Google shows the backlinks. Worry about
getting the links themselves.
