Create a Varied, Sustained &
Broad Approach to Generating Backlinks

Let's say you had a new band
that you wanted to promote. I doubt that your first step
would be to try and get them a world tour. Rather, you
would likely try to get them gigs at smaller venues;
local bars, etc.
 As
they get better known you start booking them out of
town, and only later, after they have started to develop
a reputation, do you go after larger tours.
Google treats your website
the same way. Who are you? And why should your
site be at the top?
Most of the world uses
Google. And we use it for a reason. They're good. The
results they display are relevant. In order to maintain
their position in the marketplace, Google uses and
incredibly smart algorithm that decides who get to the
top. And they are very selective.
A major overnight news story
will make it to the top. Because the world is
talking about it. Launching a new website that sells dog
food will not. Because the dog food site is like the
band that nobody knows about. You are simply one out of
millions of websites out there.
If you want to be listed at
the top of Google you need exposure. You need to be
promoted. So either do it yourself or hire a manager.
But doing nothing will keep your site safely tucked away
in obscurity.

you.
GETTING STARTED
The equivalent of "talking
about you" on the net is Backlinks. Other
websites that link to you. It's how Google calculates
popularity.
As your popularity grows -
so does your position in Google. Generally it will take
you a bit of time to work your way up to the top of the
listings. Websites gain authority
over time.
So here is the simplest way
to start moving up. Do something - every day, or every
week, or every month. Work at building up the backlinks
to your site. Work at getting some quality websites
linking to you.

Whatever strategy you employ
should be varied, sustained and broad. Use a variety of link building
tactics and spread the link juice around your site.
Don't have all your backlinks pointing to your home
page. Pick some of the most important pages on your site
and make sure you have backlinks created for those
pages.
Set a monthly backlinks
budget - $25, $50, $100. Whatever is affordable. But
make it sustained. A cumulative effect is far more
powerful than a hit and miss strategy.

Find a way to incorporate
link building as part of your normal routine. Set aside
a few hours a day, a week or a month and devote that
time to generating backlinks. You don't have a choice.
