Trying to Answer a Difficult Question

COMMON QUESTION ABOUT BACKLINKS

We are frequently asked "How long does it take to get into the Top 10?"

And the answer is - "We don't know". We can guess, but we really don't know. NOBODY can tell you EXACTLY what it takes to get a top position in Google. And that's because NOBODY knows the algorithm except the engineers at Google.

We know that Google likes good content. They've told us that.

We know Google likes backlinks. We've all figured that out.

But what the exact formula is - that's a secret that would be worth millions of dollars if it were decipherable.  

  ONSITE FACTORS - How good is your web page? It is optimized properly? Do you have focused content? Do you have all the right tags? Is the keyword density reasonable?

  OFFSITE FACTORS - How many competitors do you have? How good are their web pages? How long have they been on the net? What's their page rank? How many backlinks do they have?

The answers to these questions will help determine how long it will take to get you to a TOP 10 position.

So, if there is virtually no competition in front of you then you can probably get to the top in a week or two.

If there is tons of competition, then be prepared to wait.

THAT'S NOT AN ANSWER YOU SAY

You're right. It's too vague and general. So let's try to quantify it a bit more.

We have this chart listed in another one of our articles - but it's relevant so we'll show it again. This chart shows how many searches there are per month for each term as well as the number of specific competitors (go to Google and type in your search phrase in quotation marks - "dog training")

There is also a column that displays the Strength of Competition - an estimate of how good your competition is. Now we get this information from a program called Micro Niche Finder - it's a great piece of software and we highly recommend it. 

If it's a green light - with a reasonable budget you should get there quickly. If it's a yellow light - you'll have to spend more money and it will take more time. If it's a red light you better have deep pockets or go find another keyword. Not that it's impossible but you are probably looking at a long time to break into the top 10. 

So looking at this chart - we can tell you that we could get into the Top 10 for Nova Car Parts easier and quicker than say, Chevy Dealerships. In fact, we put up our own website for Nova Car Parts as a test. We have the number 6 spot in Google with about 80 backlinks. We probably only needed about 40 or 50

So how many backlinks would we need for Chevy Dealership. Maybe a few hundred - 200 - 300 - 400? So how long would it take you to get a few hundred backlinks?

Depends on how much work you want to do creating backlinks? Depends on how much of a budget you have to spend?

DON'T EXPECT INSTANT RESULTS

Everybody wants to see results for the money they are spending. And rightly so. But give it some time. Monitor your position weekly in the search engines - and when you undertake any campaign - don't expect to see results within a few days. Go into a campaign and give it at least 30 - 60 days to see results. If you position hasn't improved in 60 days, you probably need to try something different.

BOTTOM LINE

Backlinks will get you to the top - eventually. The difficult question is how many are needed.

But the only way to get to the top is to DO SOMETHING. However you create backlinks - by doing blog posts, by doing forum posts, by doing social bookmarking or by hiring a service - DO SOMETHING. Every day - or every week - or every month. Just DO SOMETHING. Work at it - continuously. And try to pick phrases that you have a good chance of success at. At least start out with easier keywords - get them well placed, then move on to more difficult keywords.
